While the Titanic sank on the morning of April 15th in 1912, the orchestra played the hymn “Nearer, My God, to Thee.” Passengers on deck sang along. Survivors in lifeboats reported they heard the tragic finale. The words of the song printed on the antique memorial postcard were “There let my way appear, Steps unto heaven, All that Thou sendest me, In mercy given, Angels to beckon me, Nearer, my God, to Thee, Nearer to Thee.” In the picture the angels await in the clouds on the shore of heaven as the Titanic sinks. My daughter Alix couldn’t carry a tune, and I doubt she sang before dying. But she bravely went down fighting after eight years of battling the symptoms of her bipolar disorder.
