Halloween Love Divination
View your future husband on Halloween. At the stroke of midnight, light a candle, look in a mirror, and wait for an image of your beloved to appear. The practice of Halloween love divination flourishes in the eighteenth, nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. On the 1911 postcard a girl lights her candle, gazes in the mirror and wishes “Oh may I see My future beau, And may he be A bonny boy.” Then abracadabra her red-headed, bow-tied beau materializes.
My daughter Alix didn’t conjure future boyfriends in mirrors. On October 31st Alix trick or treated in a witch costume with a black dress and pointy hat. Her long blonde hair flowed behind her as she flew ahead of her younger sister and cousins to ring doorbells and yell “trick or treat.” She received treats dropped into her orange plastic pumpkin. And the toy store owner in the apartment near ours gave her a small teddy bear. Alix relished Halloween and reigned triumphant. After Alix died, Halloween became bittersweet. The ring of our doorbell on Halloween conjures an eight-year-old Alix decked out as a witch and brings joy from the past and pain from her loss.
Has Halloween been a special holiday for you or a loved one?

So glad to have a picture of my daughter dressed up as Cleopatra for work when she was 18.
